Monthly Post & CR Meme #20: Mariah Carey Containment Breech

MONTHLY POST

Happy holidays, Dreamers! It's finally starting to get nice and cold where I am and even though I'm happy about it, my sinuses aren't no Disturbances scheduled until next April! If you've been considering getting on the Disturbance / Player Plot train, this is a great time to do it! Monthly Plot submissions would be especially helpful as I'm currently managing those all by myself so any extra ideas to take the pressure off would be super helpful.

This is especially important because starting in January, we will be picking up the metaplot in earnest and assuming there are no player plots in the queue, moving towards an event that will permanently change the world state of the game. Don't fret! Yumemigaoka will still be in one piece and any players who want to do Disturbances and player plots after this point will still be able to. They'll just be a bit different to the ones we've had so far. So if you want to run a Disturbance plot with our current setup, get in while the getting's good!

Anyway...! On top of all that, here's a few OOC announcements for this month:

Important note about December's app round! It will be running from December 10th to the end of the month! Since our app week would have fallen during the busiest part of the month, it's been extended for the holiday and year end season, with apps opening at the same time the AU Plotting and TDM goes up.

End of year housekeeping! A number of pages will be getting some updates over the holidays, just to reflect how players engage with the systems and to make certain bits of info easier to find. Generally, this is just a bit of end of year tidying up, so nothing should change from a mechanics or player experience side. Apart from...!

The player & cast caps are no longer in effect! I originally capped player participation just as a precaution to make sure the game's size didn't balloon past what I felt I could manage as a mod. But now the game's size and pace seems to have settled, I no longer thing it's necessary and am snipping it. The cast cap was also only in effect because of the player cap so with that gone, canon casts can now be as big as you like! Bring 500 final fantasy characters or genshins or whoever idk what the big casts are in dwrp rn

⧖ As a thank you for sticking around with us for another year, all players will get a freebie new power and a freebie World Alteration to do with as they please! Just put 'holiday freebie' in the cost section of the form and it's all yours.

And that's it for this month!

Last month was a chill month so there's no IC recap!

EVENT INFO & TIMELINE

Halloween-themed Torments are enough of a tradition at this point that the DU has a pretty reliable system for getting rid of the things. Just up patrols around the evening in question and usually they'll disperse by themselves once people are distracted from the holiday. But for some reason, this time around... none of these suckers are going away! They're acquiescing to the change in atmosphere by donning Santa hats, at least, but... those are still super obviously Halloween Torments! Respect the seasonal aesthetic, you little jerks...!!!

Apparently unwilling to let go of their stranglehold of the Dream Sphere, though, a number of these Torments have taken over many of the Outlying Locations in the Dream Sphere; Twinkle Keep and the Whispering Grotto are fully under Torment control currently and the little boogers are fighting to take over the Stardust Sanctuary and Reverie Necropolis as well. To make matters even worse, the Torments also have an eye on invading Slumbering City in its dilapidated state and if they manage to get a hold of that... well, nobody has any idea what they'll do but chances are pretty good it'll be bad!

As such, the DU is requesting that Dreamers help clear out these Torments before things can get any more chaotic. Some Dreamers are asked to stay within the Slumbering City and fend off any invaders while also helping with reconstruction efforts - this can either be played out between characters, or you can hop over to the World Alterations page to do so officially!

For the Dreamers heading out to deal with the Torments more proactively, this should be a pretty by-the-books Torment Hunt... but the Torments camping out in the Outlying Locations seem to have gotten some sort of Halloween themed powerup?! Each location camped out at by Torments is under what we'll call a Trick or Treat effect, meaning that the Torments in it have the chance to turn any encounter with them on its head with a surprise power up - some might even be able to spawn into full Nightmares on the spot, depending on how the cookie crumbles...!

Of course, Dreamers can also benefit from this strange effect, too. If they happen to get a Treat, their powers will temporarily be upgraded by one step, giving them a fighting chance. And if they happen to get Tricked, not only will their powers go on the fritz but they'll find themselves transformed into some sort of goofy ass lookin' Halloween monster while they're in Torment territory. Stay safe out there, Dreamers...!!!

Torment Hunts for this event should be submitted in the usual place - just make sure to note that it's an event hunt! Please also note that all event hunts this month are, by default, Medium Risk and above, so be sure you're prepared!

WORLD UPDATES

As December sweeps into Yumemigaoka, the city braces for its infamous cold snap, starting with a bone-chilling plunge in temperatures from December 15th. Yumemigaoka’s winters are known for biting winds, icy streets, and frequent snowfalls, and this year proves no different. Snow blankets the city regularly once the cold sets in, but there's an especially fierce snowstorm on the 27th that hits the city hard. Thankfully, despite the chill, the city glows with warmth - the Yumemigaoka illuminations sparkle against the snow and, and businesses buzz with end-of-year sales. All things considered, it's not a bad winter!

Over in the Dream Sphere, things are also taking a festive turn! Snow is fluttering gently down from the sky that's turned a pale lavender blue for the occasion and things are pretty cold and breezy no matter where you go in the Dream Sphere. In particular, though, the Vale of Sorrow, Whispering Grotto and Facet Lagoon will see all their bodies of water freezing over with ice that's solid enough to gallop all over... or skate, if you're so inclined. Even Fury Peak is almost tolerable this time of year...

    WORLD EVENTS

⧖ All Month: Thanks to everybody getting in their Season's Feelins (tm), Torment activity across the Dream Sphere as a whole will be greatly reduced. How conveniently timed!

!★! December 1st - 25th: Dreamer Ai-Doll's Christmas release continues to assault everyone's brains for the festive season. On pretty much everything with a screen, you'll see a round of saccharine Christmas-themed commercials starring the DU's idol - in fact, they're even starting to show up in people's dreams...?!

⧖ December 1st: Hina Flower Gardens closes for the winter season and will be reopening come springtime. Make sure to come back and give them a warm welcome when they open!

⧖ December 2nd: The anime adaptation of the popular fantasy and romance manga series Tale of the Shooting Star Knight premieres on the late night anime block! Since it's set in a snowy fantasy country, it's the perfect show to snuggle up and watch going into Christmas... so long as you don't mind busting out a hankie every episode.

⧖ December 13th-January 8th: All schools across Yumemigaoka close for the winter season. Since schools this far north close earlier than most others around Japan, this means an extra long winter vacation for students!

⧖ December 15th, onwards: It's a bit late this year, but winter has officially arrived and it's got hands! The weather takes a turn for frosty and frigid starting today as the temperature plummets, bringing frost and some light dustings of snow with it. Bundle up!

⧖ December 18th-21st: Many businesses around Yumemigaoka will be holding last minute sales and deals to try and capitalize on the last burst of holiday shopping before people begin winding down for the season. If you have yet to finish up all your holiday shopping, hop on these deals before it's too late!

⧖ December 21st: The Dreamer Union will be hosting a holiday party at the DU head office! Starting at around 3pm, everyone working at and registered with the DU will be invited to drop by, eat some yummy food from the buffet and swap gifts with friends and coworkers, if you're the gift-giving type around Christmas. It's also an informal goodbye to the Bri'ish kouhais, who will be heading back to England in January.

⧖ December 24th: It's Christmas Eve!!! Considered one of the most romantic days of the year for couples in Japan, restaurants and date spots around the city will be jam-packed with people looking for that romantic atmosphere. If you're a single pringle hoping to have a fun and festive night, you're out of luck for this holiday... or maybe you'll take advantage of the lovey dovey atmosphere to shoot your shot with a special someone?!

⧖ December 25th: Merry Christmas! In Japan, Christmas Day is the time of year for friends and couples to throw parties and hang out, so make sure you've got some plans lined up!

⧖ December 27th - 30th: A snowstorm will roll through Yumemigaoka, dropping several inches of snow and battering the city with some truly miserable winds. A cold weather warning will be issued on the 26th lasting until the 29th, but things will finally warm up a beat going into the final few days of the month.

⧖ December 31st - January 1st: The Hikawa Shrine will be open and running its traditional New Year celebrations as everyone gathers to usher in the New Year! As well as their traditional fireworks show once midnight hits, there will be fortunes to buy, yummy food to munch on and plenty of vendors hoping to get in their last big sales for the year. Be sure to get to the shrine as soon as you can - things start winding down around 1am!
