Monthly Post & CR Meme #9: Happy New Year!

MONTHLY POST

Happy New Year, Dreamers! As mentioned previously, December was mostly a month for housekeeping and tidying some stuff up. I'm pretty sure I've gotten through everything I wanted to poke at but if you happen to catch anything on the info pages that looks like a typo or other equivalent goofery on my part, please do let me know!

As well as the OOC updates/housekeeping notes below, please also check out the slightly longer section below outlining a pretty major mechanical change/addition I've been thinking of introducing to the game in the new year. I'd love to get some feedback on it before officially setting it in stone so please be sure to put your eyes on it!

All that side, let's get to the usual updates:

⧖ The Disturbances page is now live and with it, so are submissions for Disturbance player plot proposals! These will take the place of mod plots on the months they are added to the schedule. If you've been cooking on a Disturbance, drop over these and start hitting your blorbos with rocks!!!

End of year housekeeping is done! It was mostly very unexciting tidying and clarifying some potentially vague/confusing wording and generally just bringing things up to date with the current state of the game. The only major change (which is expanded on below) is that there is no longer the option to freely submit new Outlying Location ideas to the Dream Sphere Locations page. Other than that, everything's pretty much the same.

We're back to our usual app round schedule! AU Planning and the TDM will be going up on the 10th and the 11th respectively and apps open again on the 24th. oooo you wanna bring us mahous so bad oooooo

⧖ Quick reminder that January is an event lite month so everyone can ease back into things without too much pressure. It'll be focused on Torment Hunts and will be running all through January, so take it at your own pace. From February onwards, we'll be back to normal!

That's all from us for this month... for the most part. Be sure to check below for a slightly longer discussion of some important mechanics and potential changes to the game going forward!

So! One of the more experimental parts of BD's systems was always the power system and I had no idea how it was going to bounce off players once they entered the equation. While I do think things are working out fine, things have definitely progressed to the point where I want to seriously think about 'what do players spend points on if they finish upgrading their powers?'. While I don't think we're in immediate danger of that happening, I don't want to just kick the can down the road and I'd like resolve the issue by expanding the scope of what players can spend points on. I've also wanted to come up with ways to make the Slumbering City more of an interesting area for players to invest time in and I think I've come up with something that hits on both of these points!

Basically, in 2024, I'm wanting to introduce a system to the game where players can spend points to make changes and additions to the Slumbering City and rebuild it however they'd like to! This would function similarly to submitting new locations to the Yumemigaoka locations page but with way more creative freedom and encouragement to make up something wacky and cool that could only exist in a dream!

Point cost will scale depending on size and complexity and from an IC perspective, this will be characters actively using their powers to enact change on the Dream Sphere, which I think fleshes out that aspect of the lore a little more.

Obviously this won't be happening for a little while but this is why I'd like to hear everyone's feedback! Let me know what you think of this system proposal and if you have any suggestions or concerns for how things might turn out. I'm all ears!

EVENT INFO & TIMELINE

As mentioned previously, January will be an event lite month mainly focusing on Torment Hunts, with characters encouraged to spend a good amount of time clearing out the Dream Sphere of a sudden surge in Torment activity! As it always goes with Torment Hunt focused events, every character will get one additional Hunt slot for this month, making the total number of Hunts you can participate in this month three.

So, what's going on in the Dream Sphere exactly? Well, January is the DU's busiest month for one reason in particular: everyone's having their first dreams of the new year and when everyone's focusing so hard on the same thing, that can only spell trouble for the Dream Sphere...!

In addition, Dreamers will be warned to keep a look out for three powerful Nightmares known to spawn around this year; An eagle, a mountain and an... eggplant? It is all down to hatsuyume, after all...

Each Torment Hunt will have a chance of encountering one of these beasts and anyone who manages to track one down will be rewarded bonus points on top of the usual payout. Get out there and get hunting!

WORLD UPDATES

Yumemigaoka winter continues to winter as January comes around, with snowfall for the majority of the first half of the month. With the worst of the December snowfall out of the way, daily life returns mostly to normal, save for a few delayed buses as the weeks go by. Things are pretty frosty and slippery, especially once temperatures gradually start to crawl upwards and the snow covering most of the city starts melting away into mush. Thankfully in the last chunk of the month, things will warm up just enough that a heavy rainshower washes the worst of the slush out of the city but things are still pretty gloomy and cold. Rain will persist on and off through to the end of the month and things will be pretty consistently overcast to boot.

    WORLD EVENTS

⧖ January 1st - 3rd: Happy New Year! As is traditional, businesses will be shut down during this period and families will get together to relax and spend the holiday together. The DU will be operating on a rotating skeleton staff for emergency Excursions and other Dreamer-related matters but for the most part, expect things to be slow and quiet around the city over these days.

⧖ January 7th: To help their plants survive and recovery from the winter weather, the Usubeni Community Gardens is holding a fundraiser, offering a wide range of tasty dishes from their beautiful organic produce. Most of it is root veggies and other goodies that can be grown in winter and all of it is delicious. Tickets can be purchased at various local businesses around Asagi or on site at the event.

⧖ January 8th: Schools around Yumemigaoka will re-open after the extended winter break and classes will resume as usual.

⧖ January 19th-26th: Following a surprise temperature drop, yet another snowstorm will blow through Yumemigaoka, creating lots of icy roads, snow banks and generally unpleasant driving conditions. Plan ahead and dress warm for these days!

⧖ January 23rd: Yumemigaoka Language School announces their scholarship program, opening the opportunity to study their language courses and exchange classes to students who can't normally afford the cost of the courses. Applications for the next academic year are due February 7th.

⧖ January 29th: Thanks to the cold weather, several pipes in the basement of Tsubaki Department Store froze over, breaking and flooding their basement office. They've now closed temporarily to repair the damages and are expected to re-open by the 5th of next month.
