Monthly Post & CR Meme #6: Smooth Sailing

MONTHLY POST

Happy spooky month, Dreamers! A HUGE thank you to everyone who participated in last month's Disturbance event – I hope it was a blast! I've mentioned elsewhere that introducing Disturbances are one of the plot beats I was most excited about and I'm really happy to see they went over well! Just as a quick reminder, there will not be a mod-run event this month. October is intended to be a 'chill' month – though players are free to continue doing Excursions and Torment Hunts, investigate metaplot stuff, all the usual business! This break is just to give everyone a breather after our first Disturbance event and to give me some time to finish writing up the Disturbance documentation for player perusal... and to plot something extremely tasty for November's event.

In short, we would like for November's mod event to be a Disturbance event featuring a player character. This means that we'll be asking players to sign up and volunteer their characters and over the next month or so, we'll be working with them to create a kickass dungeon log and a cool boss design for them to run with everyone!

After that, Disturbance player plots will be open to everyone! We won't be able to officially start running them until after the new year, but we're SUPER PUMPED to open this aspect of the world up to the playerbase and see what kickass and creative things you guys do with it.

Like last month, we have no major OOC updates but there are one or two things to watch out for!


⧖ Reminder! As well as this month, we will also be having a event break month in December to cool down from our second Disturbance event and because it's the holidays and we expect everyone will probably be pretty busy! Players are, of course, free to run their own mingles/parties/mini events this month so go ham!

⧖ NPC interaction requests on monthly posts have been lightly revamped! Each monthly post will now have a truncated CR meme-ish comment for each available NPC with a quick recap of what their deal is and what they're up to this month. To request an NPC interaction, just comment to the appropriate header and we'll hash out a quick handwaved interaction. We're hoping this makes it easier for players to build relationships and dynamics with our NPC cast, so definitely jump in if you would like!

⧖ Our first How's The Game session will be running this month, on October 10th! I originally intended for it to happen with the six month anniversary, but given that we'll be having a second Disturbance event then, I felt like things would probably be a bit too busy – and having a feedback session between our first and second Disturbances will probably work better in terms of getting people's freshest thoughts and incorporating that feedback into the next event. In place of that planned HTG, there will be a love meme for us all to gush about how much we love each other's special little guys which feels much more in keeping with the mood of the whole thing.

⧖ And on that note – the game's six month anniversary is next month! Holy crap! There will also be a few just-for-fun additions to a few of the game's info pages so keep an eye out come next monthly post!

At the beginning of the month, an official communication from the DU goes out to all registered Dreamers.


Thank you to all Dreamers who were able to attend to last month's emergency on such short notice. We recognize that the lacking information and urgency of this situation made things stressful on a number of levels but for the sake of full transparency - those of us here at the DU knew about as much as we were able to tell everyone involved. Calling this an abnormality in our understanding of the Dream Sphere is underselling it: this is, to our knowledge, an entirely knew phenomenon and we are doing everything in our power to analyze all data gathered and provide further understanding of exactly how this occured later down the line.

What we can and are happy to confirm is that Mio Kasuga has returned to her home following her rescue from the heart of this abnormality. She does not appear to be any worse for wear but is understandably confused and experiencing some emotional distress following what happened. Most surprising of all is that upon waking up back in her home, both Mio and her parents have confirmed that she arrived with a Sandglass in hand, suggesting that she achieved some form of Awakening while over in the Dream Sphere.

DU-associated councillors are arranging for continued support and care of the family as long as it is necessary to provide it and the family have asked that we convey their thanks in intervening. The DU itself would like to highlight the effort and courage displayed by Dreamers Chaosbringer, Guardian, Cinnabar and Tycoon who were instrumental in resolving this situation. If and when possible, we ask that you provide any relevant testimony on your experiences to a registered DU officer as soon as you can.

Once more, we extend our thanks and commend all those who continue to fight in the Dream Sphere and take on challenges such as this. It's only through everyone's individual contributions that our combined efforts can bear fruit.

EVENT INFO & TIMELINE

Now that players have gotten their first look at what a Disturbance event can look like, we're now excited to announce that we'd like our second Disturbance event to be focused on a player character! This is always the form Disturbance events were supposed to take, as a way for players to give their characters a day in the spotlight and use BD's mechanics and lore to explore their inner conflict and struggles. During our break month, we plan to work behind the scenes to help one of our players create their own Disturbance and to run it as part of November's event.

To recap from our previous monthly post: Disturbances are surreal dreamscapes draw directly on the struggles, fears and emotions of a single character and create a large-scale dungeon incubating a powerful enemy at its core. Not only must this enemy be defeated in combat but to save the person at the Disturbance's core, a Dreamer needs to be able to reach them emotionally as well. That's what mahous are supposed to do, right?

To that end, we are opening signups for this! Both Dreamers and mundane characters can sign up to be featured in this event. The only requirement is that the character must have some emotional conflict they are seeking an escape from and it should be prominent enough to be twisted into the desire to abandon the real world in favor of the Dream Sphere.

WORLD UPDATES

Thankfully for everyone, October brings with it a break in the excessive heat from last month. Temperatures are still pretty summery but things are no longer quite as humid and there's a lot of cloudy, rainy weather taking the edge off the relentless sunshine. Late September through the start of October is also when autumn starts making its way through Yumemigaoka, so expect to see leaves turning and trees going bald all around the city. The month in general will be pretty unseasonably warm but temperatures will finally start to drop in earnest at the midpoint of October going into early November and a nice autumny chill will hang in the air just in time for Halloween.

WORLD EVENTS

⧖ All Month: With Halloween not far off, spooky spirits and scary movies are on everyone's minds - and as a result, Torment activity is up! The Reverie Necropolis will be buzzing with activity this month and as such, Dreamers will be encouraged to focus on it for their hunts. Torment Hunts conducted in the Reverie Necropolis this month will receive bonus points for each character.

⧖ October 1st - 6th: Following the Disturbance manifestation last month, Asagi Ward will continue to experience minor aftershocks for the first week or so of October.

⧖ October 6th: Matsuba World Market starts hosting their seasonal Harvest Market, selling fresh fruit and vegetables direct from a network of local farmers who have provided their fruits of their labour to the store. Items available will rotate every week until mid November.

⧖ October 9th - 13th: It's the least wonderful time of the year for students again - midterms are already back. But so long as you spent a good amount of time on your summer homework and studying then you should have it in the bag, right? R--RIGHT?

⧖ October 10th: The Vale of Sorrow will successfully reconnect to the rest of the Dream Sphere and be available as an Outgoing Location again from this date forward.

⧖ October 15th: Pure☆Candy announces that 'Miomio' is retiring from the group effective immediately with no graduation concert, citing 'health concerns'. Fan reaction is largely negative, though pleasantly enough the majority seems to be backlash against Pure Candy's management for seemingly overworking her to the point of damaging her health rather than Mio herself. A–all's well that ends well?!??!

⧖ October 16th - 31st: TIME TO GET SPOOKY!! Halloween is still a relatively new tradition in Yumemigaoka but the town is nicely decorated and businesses will be getting into the spirit with seasonal goods and mountains of candy to buy. Moon Bunny Market will be running a trick-or-treat themed stamp rally for the kids and holding weekly costume contests with goody bag prizes (still just for the kids I'm afraid) every Saturday until the month ends.

⧖ October 21st-22nd: The Riverwalk Theater will be screening a number of classic horror movies all during the month, capped off with a marathon screening of the legendary supernatural horror series Omens. The first three movies will run on Saturday with the final trilogy running on Sunday.

!★! October 30th: The Dreamer Union will be hosting a Halloween party with an invite extended to all Dreamers! Starting at around noon, the all-ages half of the party will be hosted at the DU office in the Waking World and wrapping at six... with a 21+ afterparty for the grown ups to get a little goofy hosted exclusively in the Dream Sphere. Hey, you can't get hungover so long as you only dreamed about drinking that much, right?

⧖ October 31st: It's Halloween!!! While not quite as infamous as Shibuya, Yumemigaoka hosts its own Halloween street party in Koubai where everyone is encouraged to dress up and have a ball! The party starts at around noon and continues well into to the next morning and while things do get a bit rowdy later at night, it's generally all in good fun.

Dreamer Ange (Saver)
Once a member of the famous "RAY" Unit, she remained with the DU after the rest of its members retired. Now a Mentor working with the Dreamer Union, she specializes in training newbie Dreamers on the specifics of combat. She's known to be a bit of a grouch and does not take any degree of bullshit but she's got a good heart under it all. Notably, Angelica's appearance does not noticeably change between the Dream Sphere and real life - after transitioning in her teens, she styled herself after her Dreamer form.
Current Status: Swamped with work at the DU following the Disturbance manifestation. Between that and the continuing mystery of Dreamer Crimson's reappearance and hostility, she's throwing herself into investigating exactly what the hell could be going on over in the Dream Sphere.

Dreamer ??? (Novice)
A freshly ex-idol gradually returning to life as an ordinary girl. Once the popular "Miomio" of Pure☆Candy, the overwhelming pressure to keep the group afloat and her inability to pursue her true passions caused her a great deal of pain. After being rescued from her Disturbance, she promptly walked out of Pure☆Candy and hasn't looked back since. Freed from the pressures of being a pure and perfect teen idol, Mio is a driven, introverted girl whose passion for piano is only matched by her own high standards for her performing. She has a bit of a hot tempered streak and is gradually re-learning how to be herself again now she's free to pursue her own wants and goals.
Current Status: Recovering from her tribulations in the Dream Sphere. DU officials and her family are insistent that she rest and Mio's happily taking them up on that. Strangely, it seems her experiences in her Disturbance caused her to Awaken as a Dreamer, but it's uncertain as of yet if she'll choose to pursue it.

About: Amane's a shy, space-and-donut obsessed thirteen year old middle-schooler with a chronic illness and a lot on his shoulders by daylight, and a mischievous, cheerful and confident little pain in the ass as Dreamer Hanako by moonlight. He's a former trainee of Ai's (and honorary nephew of sorts) who's been an Experienced Dreamer for a little bit now, and despite his gremlin attitude, he takes his Dreamer duties very seriously! (For the most part-- he IS still a child, after all) Overall, he's a lonely boy and a bit of a lil weirdo who wants to make friends but 1) isn't really sure on how to go about it, and 2) constantly shooting himself in the foot in his attempts, partially because he's so goddamn intent on keeping his identity a secret!! That said, after recent events the past couple months, he's going to be slightly less squirrelly about it (but not by a lot, sobs)

Short Term & Long Term Plans: Short term plans for the month are going to be a bit more chill thanks to the aforementioned cosplay stuff, but I still want to do things!! Camellia will for sure be participating in the Moon Bunny Halloween stamp rally, so for those who want to spot an Amane in his natural habitat, he'll be helping with the store's table on the weekend! ALSO.... SPOOPY MOVIES..... someone please go with him to see them, he's a bit of a weenie but he loves his horror films ;-; As for Halloween things, I'm... debating on whether he'll be attending the all-ages DU party because he's still skittery about letting others know he's a Dreamer (though he might give it a shot because he promised Ai he'd do better at these things), but he will absolutely be crashing the afterparty one way or another because SCHOOL NIGHTS DON'T MATTER IN THE DREAM SPHERE BABYYYYY

Long term goals are still largely same though, this kid needs to learn how to start opening up to others and making friends and realizing that acting like a little shit isn't helping him with those first two things 8'| Admittedly, how much progress he's going to make this month on that front largely depends on whether or not he'll be plucked for the Disturbance plot (because we gotta let those problems cook for delicious dungeon fodder), so we'll see!

Introduction: Kiwi in the future timezone so my schedule and hours are probably odd to everyone else that I am tagging while everyone else is asleep more often than not. I adore video games (usually JRPGs ala Tales of, Final Fantasy) and things like Disney (including Marvel and Star Wars). I try get to tags every day or two to not let them sit for too long. But yeah, not the most optimal timezone in being around when everyone else is. But I try.

About: The clumsiest ditz who is the most naïve and sheltered. Basically. Colette will trip over nothing, over air. Her clumsiness is considered 'blessed' back home since it usually somehow results in benefiting the party (such as setting off traps that it deals with their enemies for example). Colette is also as stated the most trusting and naïve, in that she will bff everyone and anyone including.....er, assassins sent to kill her. That hasn't changed even with the au. That's still a core aspect of her. And yes, she will send Everyone photos whenever she encounters another dog. She loves dogs! A lot!

In the au I'm figuring to parallel her whole Angel Toxicosis deal with her having medical issues (that she can't feel, so of course her being such a klutz is kinda. Bad.) So that aside from the Dreamer thing was a reason for her family to move to the city from the small village she grew up in. To get better medical care, for he and for her grandmother since Phaidra is getting older. Her tendency to hide things from others in not worrying them in canon? Yeah, that's. Also still a Thing. But those that get closer to her might get her to open up more to them. Or pick up on her Tell when she is lying (hint it is her giggle).

Short Term & Long Term Plans: idk more friends/cr in general since she only recently moved and all. More cr in the Waking world and with Dreamers as she figures this out and settles in with school etc. Maybe eventually/inevitably cr finding out about her health issues??? Just. Getting her better settled in in general as she figures this city and everyone in it. As she figures the Dream Sphere more.

About: Senior at Promised Morning; Team Mom who went through some bullying in middle school and had a hard few years failing to deal with it properly. She's very good at outwardly playing her ideal, bubbly, caring, outgoing self, but it's masking some moderately-severe insecurities that can cause her to react unexpectedly and show visible cracks in her facade - push them at your own risk. Big into fashion and bright colors, so long as her mood's not bringing her down; makes her own clothing and accessories, and runs an unofficial Fashion Club. Bakes sweets and gives them away freely, unless it's too damn hot; known to stress bake and will do that even if it bakes her. Plays the bass guitar, but has been too busy with her other hobbies to bring it to school, and she's still a little rusty. In the Dream Sphere, protects others with her starsand-filled bass as Dreamer Rhodonite, when she's not trying too hard and pushing herself to the ragged edge.

Short Term & Long Term Plans: Boy, last month happened! Lisa pushed herself during the Glasswrath battle, but despite everything, she actually enjoyed her time in combat - something just felt different, and she feels better about herself in battle as a result. She's in a good mood and will carry that into the first half of the month - even midterms won't do much to dull her cheer. As a result, I'm not throwing her into the Disturbance pool, because she actually has a little hope that things will be fine for the moment, and I'm not in the market to take that away from her (just yet). She's going to make weekly trips to Matsuba World Market because you will keep her from new ingredients at your own peril, and will very pointedly not even be in the same ward as the movie marathon if she can help it. Poor Lisa doesn't do well with spooky stuff, and as a result will mostly be in normal dress for the month, although she might make a witch's hat for Halloween itself if things haven't gone to hell for her yet by then. She's also very vocally with the crew that's glaring at Pure Candy's agency, from public knowledge, let alone what she saw in Miomio's Disturbance. She's putting two and two together there, incidentally; she's making a mental note to check on any of her friends in that position for their well-being.

On the other side, Rhodonite's newfound confidence in the Dream Sphere is leading her to maybe put in for Experienced once her mun comes up with the rest of the points she feels settled enough; she's going out for Sentry. Her powers are coming out a little more focused finally, and she feels like she has a theme between them I she can identify. So everything's looking up there! She'll never say no to a trip to the Dream Sphere, but now it's a little less of wanting seasoning and a little more... honing her craft.

More long-term, Lisa needs to work through some of her interpersonal-relationship trauma still, and the only way for her to do that is exposure therapy! Please come bother her. She's also good for clothing or foodstuff commissions, once midterms are over. That said...

Desired CR: Friends! Classmates! Lisa makes surface-level connections well and is a fun, open person! Until you get too close, then her walls come up and she needs to be gently coaxed into things, sob. But before you reach that point, she's more than happy to hang out, and isn't good with being alone for long periods. Please come visit her Fashion Club! Winter is her favorite season, not least because it has the accessories she most enjoys both crafting and wearing, and it can't come fast enough. She's also game to tutor people as necessary; although she's not exactly the top student in her year, she knows enough to help those who are struggling. In the Dream Sphere, she's about ready to take up the work in earnest, so please, bring her along for anything rated less than "apocalyptic". She's very excited to see how well she can defend herself after the surge of power she felt the other day.

I just wanna do stuff. 8( We'll flood Camellia with extra food or something idk, Amane's gonna cry with so many Dreamers commandeering his cafe as an unintended hang out space. Or recruit him as a model for your fashion club, he won't say no. (Does he know how to say no? who knows!)

Lisa owes Amane a little bit of grief anyway, it's fine! Lisa really will just make him shirts at the rate she'll be going, too. Just. "I need you to wear this for at least a week - not straight, ew, I don't care that much - and give me feedback on the cut and the stitching. I don't want it back after."

She hasn't introduced herself as a Dreamer to him yet, but they can always go on adventures on the other side, too, although she isn't quite ready to lead expeditions herself.

She will gleefully ignore that unless she they agree to make something crazy. If he wants to press the issue, though, she'll probably ask him to come with on a Torment Hunt - they get paid for those so that's kind of the same thing!

I'm definitely good for them to see each other at the pizza party - she's feeling a little antisocial but would still be happy to see him, I think. Especially since he was there and helped with the rescue.

About: ...she's Joan of Arc. But as an anime lesbian. So she has a big selfless heart and boundless confidence and despite being a Saver her battle style is "LEEEEEROY JENKIIIINS". Her "angel" is a rogue Dreamer who saved her life years ago, and she's been unofficially mentored ever since, though she joined the DU at the start of the game and her Official Mentor is Ai. As a veteran Dreamer despite being a high schooler, Dreamer La Pucelle is eager to go on Excursions and protect her beloved home.

Short Term & Long Term Plans: Jeannette continues to seek clout in the DU! She was away for a good portion of the summer visiting extended family, but now she's back and hoping to catch up. She and Ai will probably go looking for Dreamer Crimson, since La Pucelle was one of the first people to sort-of encounter Crimson. And dream-died in the process. CAN YOU BELIEVE CLAIRE LIT JOAN OF ARC ON FIRE.

Desired CR: I'm just coming back to the game after a month or so away, so everything's good! People for Jeannette to mentor. Older Dreamers for her to hang out with and confuse with how absolutely sure she is of herself. More girls her age to move into her family's apartment complex and fall in love with her WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING I DON'T KNOW BUT I DON'T WANT IT TO STOP IT IS VERY FUNNY. **People who can get her involved in The Overarching Plot!**

Keiwa spent the last month trying to get settled into Yumemigaoka before getting thrown into the boss fight. If you run into him and ask him about Tycoon, he will shrink away and say he didn't do much. He will be too polite to run away like he wants to though...

Short Term & Long Term Plans: I deadass wrote "I'd like him to team up with other Novices to figure things out together!" and I'm looking at him now like lol. Lmao even.

Anyway, he’s gonna be doing his usual thing in the waking world (is he still volunteering? Absolutely) but he’s also going to be starting a part time job at Camellia. Yay work! So you can probably find him helping grannies and grandpas around the Moon Bunny Market because he’s a sucker who likes to help people. ‘-’b The only people around his age you see him talk to in the show are his sister and the other contestants; everyone else who knows Keiwa are either middle aged adults or young children. Keiwa, why do you not have any friends…?

After last month, he’ll also start looking into going on excursions or hunts himself. Ai forcibly signed him up to the DU early last month, so there’s that at least. Don’t know him? No worry, just say you found a tanuki walking the halls and drag him along, he can’t won’t say no. :D

Long term plans stay the same as they were last month. :) Don’t worry about it.

Desired CR:
Keiwa has a very passive personality (which makes replies hard sometimes, I’m so sorry to everyone who feels like they need to carry the action IT’S NOT ON PURPOSE), and while it’s fun to watch him get caught up in other more headstrong characters’ wake it would be nice for him to pick up CR with similarly mild tempered characters. e's also happy to look out for people in the Dream Sphere, though he’s got like… a 60:40 ratio of being a klutz vs being cool af because he’s got no confidence in himself but he's actually decent in combat.

He’s super considerate of other people and tries very hard to get along with everyone. Keiwa himself isn’t super social but in a 1:1 relationship, he’ll absolutely put in the legwork to make things work. So I wouldn’t mind getting CR with more quiet, grumpy or condescending type characters, because I do like this dynamic. Before you ask, he does respect people’s boundaries! But he’ll still try to get along with/check up on you/make you homecooked food because he cares about people more than he should. 8(

Of course if you want to annoy him, that's fine too! Lad puts up with a lot, but he will (gently) call you out on your shit (eventually). He happily interacts with all character types in canon and I will also tag anything. The distant and aloof types, the energetic and cheerful types, the grumpy tsunderes, etc, idc and neither does Keiwa, c'mere so this Tanuki can make you a delicious bowl of soba.

About: Mitsuki is a enby up and coming idol and novice dreamer! They like to tinker in what little spare time they have. They like thinking as far outside the box as they can. They also have trouble with social interactions, usually coming off as rude or uncaring towards others. That's honestly not how they mean to come off though.

Short Term & Long Term Plans: I am coming back after several months of real life taking its toll lol, so im still sorting out plans. Mitsuki had to take a break from their Dreamer work for [insert reason here] so they're still pretty new to everything and probably needs some help getting acclimated to the job. I do eventually also want them to do more idol-y things.
